IPhone 15 colors / the latest rumors

IPhone 15 colors  / the latest rumors of new iPhone

Here's what we've heard about the possible colors for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro

The colors of the iPhone 15 are sure to be a hot topic of discussion in the months leading up to the launch of new Apple phones this fall.  Colors provide one way for a phone to reflect your personal style, and as one of the things besides the type of model and storage capacity that you can select, colors can add to the appeal of the device - or leave you cool.

Take the new yellow color that Apple introduced in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 mini.  While some people may have appreciated the shiny color of the minion, others may have found the new look glowing and a bit cartoony.  But it adds a sixth color to the iPhone 14 lineup, giving shoppers more options and - from Apple's perspective at least - potentially spurring additional sales.

So, yes-colors will be an important part of the iPhone 15 story, which is probably why we are already hearing quite a few rumors about the colors under consideration.  While we still have half a year to go before the likely iPhone 15 release date, you can expect a lot of talk about the possible colors of the phone between now and September.

With the caveat that a lot can change in the coming months, here's what we know about the colors of the iPhone 15 and what previous color decisions can tell us about this year's models.

IPhone 15 colors: what Apple has done recently

Before diving into the iPhone 15 color rumors, it might be worth revisiting the color choices Apple has made for recent phone releases.  If we do that, we will see some patterns emerge.

Considering the standard iPhone for the past four years, Apple tends to offer consumers a choice of five colors when launching phones in the fall.  (The exception was the 2019 iPhone 11 version, where this model was available in six colors.) IPhone Pro options tend to be somewhat limited - the last four versions of the iPhone Pro came in only four colors.

As for the color options themselves, the standard iPhone models - which include the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 13 mini and more recently the iPhone 14 Plus - tend to come in bright colors, compared to the more subdued options available for Pro models.  Some of my favorites tend to come back year after year: there is always a red [Product] iPhone model as well as black and white models.  (Apple called those Midnight and Starlight recently.) On the iPhone Pro interface, gold, silver and some types of graphite or black are the mainstays, with a fourth option that changes from year to year.

There is another wrinkle for iPhone colors.  Since the iPhone 12, Apple has introduced at least one new color in the spring, similar to this year's yellow iPhone 14. The iPhone 12 and 12 mini received a purple option.  For the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, the color was green, while the iPhone 13 Pro got its own Alpine Green option.

One thing about those spring colors: they don't stick to the new iPhones that came out the following fall.  In other words, we do not expect the new shade of yellow to have any effect on the colors of the iPhone 15.

IPhone 15 colors: what we heard

So far, there has been one rumor about the colors of the iPhone 15, but it is well documented.  9to5Mac  cites a source claiming that the iPhone 15 Pro will display a dark red color option.  This special color will replace the Deep Purple available for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The colors of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max may be a departure from past years, given another rumor about these two models.  Apple is reportedly switching from stainless steel to titanium for the iPhone 15 Pro, and this new material could affect the colors that Apple uses in its Pro phones.  The Titanium Apple Watch is available in silver and black, and those watches could also appear as possible colors for the iPhone 15 Pro.

The colors of the iPhone 15 are a little more vivid.  The 9to5Mac report itself is from previous claims that light blue and pink are being tested as possible options for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.  As shown, the first option is basically a sky blue shade while the latter has a bright pink look.

If light blue and pink ended up getting the grade for the iPhone 15, they would be well placed with the midnight, Starlight and red [product] colors that are likely to return from previous iPhone models.

IPhone 15 colors: what to expect

It's too early to say what colors are coming to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro this fall.  While the current rumors about the colors seem solid enough, Apple has been known to change its mind depending on how the prototypes and production go.

Still, assuming the iPhone 15 comes in five colors like its predecessors did, we like the idea of light blue and pink iPhones joining the midnight, Starlight, and [Product Red] options.  Likewise, we certainly expect the silver and black iPhone 15 Pro models, which are joined by the rumored dark red.  It remains to be seen whether Apple retains the Gold color for its Pro phones or scales down to three color options for new models
